I worked with Unique Van lines a few months ago. I have rarely come into contact with a more shady and difficult company. Many of my friends and I used them as we moved away from med school at UM and all of us have had problems. They broke a ton of our stuff. They paid our claim only in part stating that some of our items were still "usable" Since they were usable, they paid only 1/2 of the value. Additionally, the lady who answers the phone is a pathological liar and has mislead my friends and I many times. Don't trust her. Please don't use this company. To their credit though, their estimate was accurate for me. At least 2 have made formal complains to the Better Business Bureau (BBB), one contacted the IRS for faulty transactions, and 2 had their items held hostage until a higher dollar amount than the quote was paid.

Business's response - by Unique Van Lineson 10/18/2010

First we would like to take this opportunity to apologize for any inconvenience during the customer's relocation. When the customer contracted Unique Van lines for his relocation, he did not purchase a full coverage insurance for his belongings. On the order for service that the customer signed and on the bill of lading that the customer signed on the move date, it clearly stated that the price includes a basic valuation of $0.60 per lb per article.
According to the claim that the customer sent to Unique Van Lines he had a minor damage on his sofa (which we can provide pictures of damage) and a piece of a marble top coffee table broke. Since the customer refused to pay extra for additional packing for the marble even though our driver informed him that we highly recommend to use extra packing for that specific item at a low cost, we become no longer responsible for the damage. However we still offered him the basic coverage of $0.60per lbs per article, but he refused to accept that.
Regarding the customer's accusation about other unhappy customers that contact IRS or those customer's that we held their belongings hostage are beyond ridiculous accusations. We have a very long list of satisfied customers. We are in the business of keeping them this way. Especially when most of our business is based on referrals. We did everything we can to satisfy this customer and we still will, but within reason.
